When I was recently at a street festival in Brooklyn listening to music, I met a guy who told me something I never knew about Westport, my hometown.

“Westport has more writers and artists per capita than any town in the country,” he told me. Coincidently, just a few days before I had stopped in at the Westport store called Societies Exhibit, “The New Yorker in Westport” which shows covers of the revered magazine illustrating selections from the remarkable hundreds of covers produced by artists living in Westport and neighboring town Weston.

One of my favorite covers was from the early 1930s and shows compote beach and the picturesque pavilion. Another shows historic long shore overlooking the sound.

The Westport Historical Society

The exhibit at the Westport Historical Society “Cover Story: The New Yorker in Westport” has been extended until July 7th.

For many years we’ve taken a weeks vacation in Block Island either renting a house or staying at the Atlantic Inn. But now we are finding “staycations” and trips to Compo just as much fun. Since I travel so much as head one of New York City’s boutique travel public relations agencies, I find that staying put is just fine by me.

So if you’re looking for a quick getaway try the Longshore Inn and its’ lively bar and restaurant splash. It’s only an hour by train from Manhattan and walking distance to the beach.

But if you have a chance before July 7th take a trip out to Westport and see the historical exhibit, “Cover Story: The New Yorker in Westport.”
